National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Recertification

The NIHSS is a focused neurological assessment for stroke patients that evaluates changes that are specific to stroke that might otherwise be missed without this stroke-specific neurological assessment. The NIHSS can help recognize improvement or worsening symptoms of stroke, or acute neurological changes. Required of all Stroke Unit nurses: Emergency Department, ICU, Intermediate Unit, Oncology 6, Hybrid OR/Thrombectomy staff (i.e., Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, etc.) and all Float RN’s.

Directions for Recertification

  • Complete modules and take test certificates in sequence (example, A for the first time, then B, C, D, etc.).
  • Plan for 2-3 hours, should not take longer than 4 hours.
  • Email your certificate to Human Resources, hr-operations@uchc.edu.

Staff Education

Nurses providing stroke care, as identified by the organization, are required to attend a minimum of 8 hours of education per year on cerebrovascular disease and stroke.

All staff must have the required education on file before December 30, 2023. Document all education on your Educational Summary – this gets turned in with your evaluation.
