Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Certification
Register for BLS/CPR
About CPR Classes at UConn John Dempsey Hospital
CPR classes at UConn John Dempsey Hospital are only available to UConn John Dempsey Hospital employees who are direct care providers in which CPR is a requirement for their position. Please see HAM Policy 8-022D and Appendix B.
CPR classes are limited in size, so please register well ahead of time if you have a specific date in mind. For class location information, please contact sped@uchc.edu.
Upon completion of CPR, you will receive a card electronically. The card will be emailed to your UConn Health email address. Forward the eCard to your manager and to Human Resources, hr-operations@uchc.edu, in order to be recorded as compliant.
If you need a replacement card, please go to the American Heart Association website. Enter first name, last name, and email address.
Recertification Options
CPR Recertification Training (4 Hours)
To register, log into your Saba account or click on the icon on your desktop, type in username and password.
Search CPR or BLS to View Classes (please see below for details). Once registered, a confirmation email will be sent to your inbox. Click accept to mark your calendar as a reminder.

Online Training and 1 Hour Skills Validation Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider (HCP)
The American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider (HCP) Online Training offers a flexible CPR training option for healthcare professionals. This program recognizes and appreciates that healthcare professionals enter the course with knowledge and skills acquired from prior CPR training and years of patient care.
Step 1 - Email the Nursing Education Department at sped@uchc.edu to obtain an online course key.
Step 2 - Register for the 1 hour BLS skills validation through Saba.
Step 3 - Bring certificate of completion with you to your skills validation, credit WILL NOT be awarded without certificate from Online Training and completion of Skills Validation.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification
Register for ACLS
If ACLS is required for your position at UConn John Dempsey Hospital, the course will be paid for by UConn Health.
Please reference Hospital Administrative Manual Policy 8-022D and Appendix A ACLS.
Email approval from your manager is needed prior to registration in order for registration to be paid by UConn Health.
Register for ACLS through your Saba account. Do not use personal funds to pay for the course.
Intended Audience
ACLS is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units
Course Features
- Course uses learning stations for practice of essential skills simulated clinical scenarios that encourage Active participation.
- Hands-on class format reinforces skills proficiency.
- Classroom-based works well for learners who prefer group interaction and instructor feedback while learning skills.
Prerequisites
Candidates must have and submit a copy of a current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR card when they register.
Courses
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is available in two different training methods - instructor-led classroom training and blended learning.
Instructor-led classroom training is offered:
- 2-day full certification for new RN graduates or for those who have not taken ACLS previously.
- 1-day recertification for those renewing their current ACLS certification.
ACLS Blended Learning - the ACLS blended learning is a combination of online eLearning, in which the student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on skills validation session. Participants interested in this method can obtain an online eLearning course by emailing sped@uchc.edu and scheduling the skill validation using your Saba account.
New ACLS and BLS Renewal Option - we are now offering ACLS recertification with an option for participants to earn a BLS provider e-card during ACLS class. This course will begin with BLS infant skill testing and a written exam followed by the ACLS recertification course. Upon successful completion of the ACLS course, the participant will earn both BLS and ACLS provider eCards. If interested, please see ACLS scheduled dates with asterisks*
ACLS and BLS Skill Sessions - we are also offering ACLS skill validation sessions with BLS skill validation. The participant completes both the Heartcode BLS and ACLS online courses and registers for a skill validation session. If interested, please see the ACLS scheduled dates with asterisks*.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
PALS Training and Certification at UConn John Dempsey Hospital
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is a specialized training for emergency care of children and infants and includes everything from BLS training and ACLS training but with the unique considerations required for small children and infants.
Prerequisites: Candidates must have and submit a copy of a current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR card to the instructor.
Intended Audience: The PALS course is for healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children and is available to direct care providers where PALS is required for their position (Hospital Administrative Manual Policy 8-022D Appendix D PALS). These include personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units.

Choose From These Course Options
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider - First Time Certification: Live 2 day (8-hours/day) course for PCLS-certified required staff who need to earn their first time certification.
Prerequisite: students must complete the PALS Precourse Self-Assessment. Students are then presented with 12 In-hospital patient cases and a team dynamics lesson. Cases may be repeated as many times as necessary to pass. Hybrid Option Available: Blended Online Training and 90 Minute Skills Validation
Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which the learner completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by an in-person 90 minute skills session (PALS Heartcode: part 1 and part 2)*
HeartCode® PALS is an online comprehensive eLearning program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development.
- Register for the 90 minutes Skill Validation Session using your Saba account.
- You will receive access to PALS online course 3 weeks prior to your skill session.
- Please check your email/inbox for eLearning.
- Complete the American Heart Association Online Heartcode PALS course online, print certificate and bring with you to your Skill Validation Session.

- Upon completion, you will receive an email to your UConn Health email address to claim your ecard
- PALS Provider Course Completion Card is valid for two years.
- Once received, forward the ecard to your supervisor and Human Resources at hr-operations@uchc.edu in order to be recorded as compliant.

Non-Violent Crisis Prevention (CPI) Training
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Training and Certification at UConn John Dempsey Hospital
Registration for the 2024 CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training is now available.
Click the link above to register.
You can also use the Saba icon on your desktop to enroll. Type in your username and password and search CPI.

CPI classes are available to direct care providers where CPI is required for their position.

Course Enrollment Options:
Option 1:
Blended Course which includes 2 Hour Online Training plus 4 hour, instructor-led, hands-on class
Requirements for registration:
- This option is for new 1st time or EXPIRED CPI Certification.
- This option requires completion of online modules prior to class.

Option 2:
Refresher Course which is a LIVE, 4 hour, instructor-led, hands-on class. NO ONLINE PORTION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS OPTION.
Requirements for registration:
- This option is for staff with CURRENT CPI Certification who are in need of renewal.
- Proof of Current CPI certification will be verified before registration is confirmed.

Registration confirmation will be emailed to you via your UConn Health email address.
The location for all CPI classes is Munson Road Conference room unless notified otherwise.

After you successfully pass a CPI course you will receive a blue Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention completion card with the date of class and expiration date. CPI certification is good for two years.

Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum (TNCC) Training
Visit the TNCC website for available courses and more information.
Prerequisites
- Only registered nurses are eligible for provider status.
- Licensed practical nurses and paramedics are eligible to attend all portions of the course and obtain CNE hours, but are not eligible for provider status verification.
